Handmade  by Cree Artist Jessica Sanderson-barry

 

Ohkomimâw mikisiw Grandmother Golden Eagle, her english name is Jessica Sanderson-Barry is a nêhiyaw-iskwêw and mother from Chakastaypasin Band, Treaty Six Territory. Jessica started beading in high school and learned different beading techniques from knowledge keepers and other Artists throughout the years. Jessica say's "beading is a connection to her late grandmothers".  

 

Jessica has created her wearable art under the name JShine Designs and has just recently registered her business. She is an emerging entrepreneur working out of Edmonton, Alberta. By combining both traditional and contemporary beading styles into her art, JShine Designs allows for traditional Indigenous art forms to transcend time and shine in contemporary times.

JShine Designs is 100% Indigenous owned and focuses on handmade jewelry and accessories. Jessica loves to use elements from the land such as hides, traditional home tanned elk hide, porcupine quills, animal bone and shells. Jessica’s feather collections are all named after her grandmothers and grandfather. Each collection pays homage to her ancestors who all contributed to Jessica’s life and her journey.  Some of the collections include:

Jessica is recently graduated with her second degree Bachelor of Arts, majoring in Native studies and minoring in Women’s and Gender Studies at the University of Alberta.  Also obtained a Certificate in Aboriginal Governance and Partnerships.  Education was always important to Jessica and her education journey started through NAIT in 2007, in which she obtained both an Accounting Diploma and graduated with a Bachelor Business Administration Degree (2013).
